On 6 March 1957, Ghana made history by becoming the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from colonial rule.
The nation’s founding leader, Kwame Nkrumah, famously declared that Ghana’s independence would be:
“Meaningless unless it was linked to the total liberation of the African continent.”
Nearly seven decades later, those powerful words continue to inspire Africans both on the continent and across the global diaspora.
In Kalgoorlie, the anniversary celebration reflected not only Ghana’s historic achievement but also the enduring spirit of African unity, resilience, and cultural pride.

The event was a vibrant display of Ghanaian culture and community togetherness.
Guests enjoyed a range of activities and experiences, including:
The venue transformed into a lively gathering place where community members proudly celebrated their heritage while sharing their culture with the wider Goldfields community.

One of the most memorable moments of the celebration was the induction of Pastor Peter Young into the Ghanaian Community Hall of Fame.
The honour recognised his dedication and long-standing service to the community.
Presenting the award, the event convenor Dr. Elias Menyanu highlighted the important role that volunteers play in building strong and supportive communities.
“This award is the first of its kind in the life of the Ghanaian Community in Kalgoorlie,” Dr. Menyanu explained.
“We hope to continue recognising people who devote their time and energy to serving both our community and the broader Kalgoorlie community.”
The recognition was warmly received by attendees, who applauded Pastor Young’s commitment and contributions.

The Ghana Independence celebration demonstrated how multicultural communities enrich regional Australia.
Events like this highlight the cultural diversity of the Goldfields region, while strengthening relationships between different communities.
For many attendees, the gathering was more than a historical remembrance — it was a living expression of African identity, unity, and pride.
As Ghana celebrates 69 years of independence, the Kalgoorlie Ghanaian community proudly echoed the words of their national anthem:
“God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong.”
